umncamo wamaNdebele
A story of disruption, continuity, and cultural resilience
Ndebele beadwork is a living language marking the passage of a woman’s life through form, colour, and symbol. Worn across stages of childhood, initiation, and marriage, each piece encodes identity, status, and belonging.

This visual language has endured profound rupture. From the Boer and Ndebele War to the spatial violence of apartheid, displacement disrupted the transmission of knowledge and fractured community life. Yet beadwork persisted not unchanged, but adaptive. What appears as stylistic shift is, in fact, evidence of agency: a tradition continuously re-authored by Ndebele women.

umncamo wamaNdebele brings this tension into focus between loss and continuity, memory and reinvention. Created in collaboration with Ndebele women from Mpumalanga, the works are not representations but acts of relation: honouring women as custodians, innovators, and authors of a living archive.

18th La Biennale di Venezia, La Biennale Architettura

Presented within an installation by Kate Otten Architects, Threads traces a material history of Johannesburg. It reflects on gold, its extraction, and the shaping of the city, narrated through women’s weaving as acts of memory and record.

We contributed a beaded necklace mapping the night sky above the Vredefort Dome. Constellations and the Milky Way are rendered in glass beads, repositioning extracted gold as an African artefact rather than a commodity.

Each bead is carefully selected and threaded. Direction, rhythm, and asymmetry are composed with precision, binding cosmology, material, and authorship.
